Lamorde Drags Senate To Court over Corruption Allegation

Ibrahim Lamorde has dragged the Nigerian Senate to court. In the suit filed by his counsel Festus Keyamo before a Federal High Court in Abuja, Lamorde is challenging the powers of the Senate to question him over alleged corruption, Daily Trust reports.

Those joined as defendants in the suit are: the Senate, Senate committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The committee on ethics, privileges and public had on Tuesday, November 17, said that Lamorde must appear before it to answer to allegation of diversion of N1 trillion recovered corruption loot or face sanctions.

In response, his lawyer said the Senate was ignorant of the powers vested on it by the constitution.

The former EFCC boss wants the court to determine whether in view of the provisions of Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution the Senate committee has the powers to invite him over issues surrounding an office he has vacated.

He also wants the court to determine whether in view of Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution, the committee can stop his counsel from appearing on his behalf “only for the purpose of raising objection to procedural defects in the invitation to the Plaintiff to appear before the 2nd defendant.”

Lamorde asked the court to make an order against the defendants restraining them from executing any warrant issued against him.

No date has been fixed for hearing.
