Ahead of the January 9 rerun governorship election in Bayelsa state, fresh reports have emanated following an alleged N200m offered as bribe to Baritor Kpagih, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), to manipulate the outcome of the election.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) had alleged that Governor Seriake Dickson offered a bribe of N200m to Kpagih to manipulate the outcome of the election, but this has triggered a reaction from a group known as the Bayelsa state justice forum.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Yenogoa, the state capital, Pastor Markson Konugha, the group’s coordinator, dubbed the allegation from the APC as false, spurious and baseless, Today.ng reports.
He said: “While it was not necessary to join issues with the APC, a party which has already lost the governorship election in Bayelsa state, and is reputed to thrive on propaganda and blackmail, it was pertinent to set the records straight so that the unsuspecting public is not misled and misinformed by the APC.
“The bribe story only exists in the imagination of its authors and we challeng the APC to present evidence of how the alleged sum of N200m was handed to the INEC’s REC by Governor Seriake Dickson, through whom, and by what channel it was transmitted.
“These provocative acts of mudslinging, in a desperate bid to manipulate the outcome of the rescheduled elections in the Southern Ijaw Local government area of the state, scheduled for January 9, 2016, will not work.”
Konugha added that the group was aware that investigation is on-going into the claim by Baritor Kpagih that some influential politicians attempted to bribe him before the December 2015 Governorship election, as information has it already, that the APC governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, did actually approached the REC, through his wife with a cash sum of One million US Dollars which was out rightly rejected by Mrs. Kpaghi.
Baritor Kpagih, had disclosed that he was offered money to rig the December 5/6 governorship election.
According to him, his refusal to collect their bribe and help them made him their enemy and they started persecuting him and spreading all sorts of false stories about him.
