Angelique Kerber won Serena Williams with 6-4 3-6 6-4 score in a classic Australian Open final. Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles remains intact.
The 28 year-old Angelique Kerber won the match for two hours and eight minutes.Eurosport reports that Kerber was in tears as, at the age of 28 and in her first major final, she produced some staggering play as she became the first German since Steffi Graf in 1999 to win a grand slam title.The source also stressed that Williams herself could only smile as she warmly hugged and congratulated the winner, knowing full well that she had simply been outplayed by one of the finest performances in a Grand Slam final for years.
After the match Kerber said: ” “It’s been a crazy two weeks. The first round when I was match point down; my first win over Azarenka; and now Serena. It’s special. I was trying to enjoy every second. I was enjoying when I stepped on court. The whole two hours. The crowd was amazing. I started to believe. I am a good player and I can show it on the big courts. It’s crazy to say but I am a Grand Slam champion now.Serena told me she was really happy for me & I deserved it. She’s a great person, inspires a lot of people. It was great from her.”
